A Brief History
According to The National Archives, the premise of Thanksgiving was a meal shared between 52 English Pilgrims and 90 Wampanoag Native Americans to celebrate a successful harvest. Notably, it was not called “Thanksgiving” at the time; instead, being seen as a peaceful exchange between a once wary Wampanoag and the Pilgrims, who were saved from starvation by the Wampanoag’s knowledge of hunting and planting. Over the centuries the idea of Thanksgiving evolved and changed into what we know of today. Abraham Lincoln was the first President that formally recognized it, hoping to inspire unity and peace during the civil war.
