The Healthcare System Poly Crisis and How Case Medical Can Help

Uncertain Times

If you think we are living in a time dominated by a climate crisis, a migration crisis, or a healthcare delivery crisis, you're mistaken; we are facing a poly crisis, the simultaneous occurrence of several catastrophic events that are nearly impossible to solve. Those of us in the Healthcare Community are concerned about the effects of tariffs on supplies, raw materials, and access to medical devices for patient care procedures. Having experienced the supply chain crisis 8 years ago and once again this year in 2025, we need to be prepared and plan for what’s ahead. Worse than planned disruptions are dealing with unpredictability, what’s coming next without warning. That includes new tariffs planned for August 1, 2025, that are not yet defined.

The Big Beautiful Bill Affects Those Most in Need

The Big Beautiful Bill, passed by Congress on July 4, 2025, compounds the issues for healthcare and the community. H.R. 1 not only has changes to Medicaid with work requirements, even for those disabled and in single parent households, but further restricts access for those with ACA eligibility as it phases out federal medical assistance, and cuts Medicaid for those most in need. Folks in rural communities rely on community hospitals, which are already losing money, and many are closing or being purchased by venture capitalists whose major goal is transactional, based on growing their investment.

A Health System CEO Lays Out His Concerns

Providence Health System is comprised of 51 hospitals in several states. Their president and CEO was recently quoted in Becker’s Hospital Review, “The passage of H.R. 1 by Congress poses a significant threat to the health and well-being of our communities, placing essential health programs and services at risk while stripping access to health care for millions of Americans,” At a time when more Americans are contracting infectious diseases and medical research funding is at an all time low, Mr. Wexler, said. “Eliminating nearly $1 trillion from Medicaid and the ACA marketplace funding over the next decade will impact every American. These sweeping reductions will limit health services; lead to care delays and longer wait times, especially in emergency departments; and place undue strain on overburdened healthcare providers.”

Live, Learn, Be Prepared

During the last supply chain crisis and the pandemic, Case Medical kept our doors open and expanded our infection control product line to respond to the immediate need for hand sanitizers, surgical masks, cleaners, disinfectant wipes, and sprays utilizing 70% alcohol in solution. This time, we are even more prepared, securing critical raw materials for product manufacturing through 2026 and buying additional critical equipment in advance of the next round of tariffs.  Most equipment needed for manufacturing is not even available in the USA, and most supplies come from China or other countries across the globe. Currently, Japan and South Korea are targeted for the next round of tariffs.
