The Power of Hands-On Learning for Sterile Processing

05 Sep

Hands-On Learning Works for EVERYONE

Hands-on learning means learning by doing. Experiential learning environments provide endless hands-on learning benefits for all people, including SPD professionals. Young children learn through meaningful hands-on experiences—through touching, doing, and moving. Research has shown that, in fact, people of all ages learn better when they are actively engaged in their learning journey. Over the years, experienced SPD staff have been replaced with travelers and a new generation of learners. Navigating surgical instrumentation IFUs for robotics and other minimally invasive devices has become so complex and detailed that avoiding errors, even inadvertent ones, is challenging. While photos and digital access to IFUs on devices like our scannable barcode on SteriTite containers are handy, they cannot replace hands-on demonstrations of best practices.

Never Stop Learning

Albert Einstein once said, “When you stop learning, you start dying.” After all, your brain is like a muscle – the more you use it, the stronger it gets. Probably one of the best ways for adults to continue learning is through hands-on learning. Some professionals consider it uniquely positioned to benefit any type of learner. We understand the benefits of onsite product demonstrations to ensure that instructions are followed and proper precautions are understood and put in place. Case Medical wants to share our knowledge and experience over more than three decades with you as manufacturers of products for sterilization and instrument processing. In fact, manufacturing and sterile processing have a lot more in common than you think. Both are grounded in the same fundamental goal: ensuring patient safety by eliminating microorganisms. Both fields manage a production process with a clear, defined flow to produce a finished product with consistent, predictable, and high-quality outcomes. Both involve meticulous cleaning to remove contaminants. Both require highly trained and qualified personnel to adhere to strict protocols.

Hands-On Assessment and Learning at Your Facility

Sterile Processing plays a critical role in ensuring safe and successful surgical outcomes. Inconsistent practices and documentation gaps can result in surgical delays, increased infection risk, and compliance and accreditation issues. Workflow inefficiencies often lead to increased labor costs and unnecessary rework of previously processed products. Inadequate maintenance of equipment contributes to premature failure. In healthcare settings, following best practices and standard operating procedures is not only important but also needs to be independently monitored by experienced, knowledgeable personnel. In Europe, these people are called authorized people. Before auditors come to your department, an independent review of current procedures with experienced SPD leaders can help you prepare.

Case Medical is offering a complimentary, confidential online questionnaire to score and evaluate your SPD operations. Review the results and next steps at no charge with one of our clinical specialists with decades of experience as managers, educators, and key opinion leaders.

Upon completion of the survey, one of our clinical consultants will contact you to review your score with tailored recommendations. And for a nominal charge, a member of the Case Medical clinical team can go onsite to prepare your SPD department for the next audit and provide education, including hands-on learning with CEs.
